Pre-Op Care
A little preparation goes a long way, and knowing what to do before your procedure helps everything go more smoothly. This page walks you through what to expect and how to set yourself up for the best possible outcome.
Scheduling and Appointments
Once your surgery is confirmed — make note of your date, time, and location. Plan to arrive 15 to 30 minutes early to allow time for check-in and any final paperwork. If anything changes or you have questions leading up to your appointment, please don’t hesitate to call us. We’re happy to help sort things out ahead of time so you feel confident when you arrive.
In the Days Leading Up to Surgery
A few simple steps before your procedure make a real difference in how smoothly things go. Here’s what we recommend in the days before your appointment:
- Arrange for a trusted adult to drive you to and from your appointment if you’ll be receiving sedation or anesthesia
- Set up a comfortable space at home where you can rest after your procedure
- Stock your kitchen with soft, easy-to-eat foods like yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes
- Fill any prescriptions in advance so they’re ready when you get home
The Day Before Your Surgery
Keep things simple the evening before. Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours prior to your procedure, as both can affect healing and anesthesia. Get a full night of sleep and confirm your transportation and companion arrangements so the morning feels relaxed and organized.
The Day of Your Surgery
The morning of your procedure, keep these guidelines in mind:
- Follow fasting instructions carefully if you’re receiving sedation — nothing to eat or drink for the period your surgeon specified
- Take any approved medications with just a small sip of water, only if instructed to do so
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing and supportive shoes
- Leave jewelry, contact lenses, and nail polish at home
- Brush your teeth and rinse thoroughly before leaving the house
- Arrive a little early. That buffer gives you time to settle in, ask any last-minute questions, and feel ready before your appointment.

Common Questions About Pre-Op Care
If you’re scheduled to receive sedation or anesthesia, fasting beforehand is a safety requirement, not just a recommendation. If you’ve had something to eat or drink within the restricted window, contact our office right away. In most cases, we’ll need to reschedule your procedure to keep you safe. We understand that accidents happen and we’ll work with you to find a new time as quickly as possible.
It depends on the medication. Some are safe to take with a small sip of water, while others may need to be paused before surgery. Your care team will give you specific guidance during your consultation. When in doubt, call us before your appointment rather than making that decision on your own.
Let us know. A little anxiety before oral surgery is completely normal, and it’s something we’re here to help with. Reaching out ahead of your appointment gives us the opportunity to talk through your concerns, review your sedation options, and make any adjustments that would help you feel more at ease.
